There are 110 different models of driving licence in current use throughout the E.U, that's not to mention driving licences issued outside of the E.U that are still accepted for exchange in different E.U countries.
There's TWO ways to obtain a European Union driving licence. First way is to exchange your current driving licence, you complete our application form and we print it out and translate some of your driving licence and translate the application form, put it all together and apply for an E.U. licence. This is a way to obtain driving categories that you select on the application form as the foreign issuing authority will look at the translation and not the licence.
The second way is to make a declaration that your licence has been lost/mislaid/stolen in a certain country that we know about. No other proof that you have even passed a test is required, just your sworn declaration. They will issue you with a temporary driving licence which we can then get translated and exchanged for an E.U. licence. SNEAKY? Yes, but Illegal? We have been advised NO.
Some countries driving licence departments wont talk to other E.U. countries, so nobody bothers to check if the licence you present for exchange is even REAL or not, it could be a 20 dollar fake driving licence card and no one knows or even cares. |

It is your legal right to hold any member country E.U driving licence, preferably you should be driving on a licence that was issued in a different E.U country to the country you are resident and driving in for a number of reasons. The number one reason is of course so that it becomes a lot more difficult for the authorities to make a permanent record on your driving licence and driving history should you be prosecuted for driving offences. Forget the headache of being disqualified from totting up points on your licence or increasing insurance premiums! The second reason is that it is more economical to hold a licence from another country. Replacement charges for lost documents are a fraction of the UK DVLA price to issue a new replacement licence.

European Community/European Economic Area
Licences issued in the European Community and three other countries in the European Economic Area are treated equally.

| Visitors to the Great Britain |
| If someone holds a valid Community licence and they are visiting Great Britain, they can drive any vehicle which they are entitled to drive for as long as their licence remains valid. The appropriate full entitlement for the vehicle they want to drive must be shown on their licence. |
|
| People who become residents |
| If someone has a valid Community licence, this will authorise them to drive in this country for the periods set out below. Alternatively, they can apply to exchange their licence for a British one at any time. |
|
| Provided their licence remains valid they may drive in Great Britain: |
- ordinary licence holders - until aged 70 or for three years after becoming resident whichever is the longer period.
- vocational licence holders - until aged 45 or for five years after becoming resident whichever is the longer period.
- if they are aged over 45 (but under 65) until their 66th birthday or for five years after becoming resident, whichever is the shorter period
- if they are aged 65 or over, for 12 months after becoming resident.

| Holders of a full Northern Ireland driving licence can exchange it for a full Great Britain licence, or they can use their licence here until it runs out. When it expires they may apply for a Great Britain licence. A Northern Ireland ordinary licence may be exchanged provided it was issued on or after 1st January 1976. A vocational licence may be exchanged if issued on or after 1st April 1986. A person may take a driving test in Great Britain using their Northern Ireland provisional or full licence if this gives the appropriate entitlement. |

The designated countries are:

| If someone is resident outside the UK, and is temporarily in this country and holds a full ordinary entitlement, they can drive any category of vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes and with up to 16 passenger seats shown on their licence for up to 12 months from the date they last entered Great Britain. This applies whether or not they brought the vehicle into Great Britain. If they also hold full entitlement to drive large lorries or buses they are only allowed to drive large vehicles registered outside Great Britain that they have driven into the country. |

| Provided a person’s full licence remains valid, they can drive small vehicles for 12 months from the time they became resident. To ensure continuous driving entitlement a Great Britain licence must be obtained before this period elapses, by exchanging their licence for a Great Britain licence. If they do not do this they must stop driving, although they may apply to exchange their licence at any time within five years of becoming resident. |

| New residents may not drive medium or large vehicles or passenger carrying vehicles until they have passed the relevant Great Britain driving test.
Gibraltar vocational licence holders can drive for 12 months and can exchange a valid vocational licence within five years of date of residency. |

| Jersey, Guernsey or Isle of Man |
|
Ordinary licence holders: provided the full ordinary licence remains valid, a visitor can drive any category of vehicle shown on their licence for 12 months.
Vocational licence holders: if they are visiting Great Britain and they hold a vocational licence issued in Jersey or the Isle of Man, visitors can drive British registered or vehicles registered outside Great Britain that they have driven into the country for a period up to 12 months. If their vocational licence was issued in Guernsey they can drive temporarily imported vehicles only. |

Ordinary licence holders may drive in Great Britain for up to 12 months from the time they became resident. To continue driving after that time their licence must have been exchanged for the British equivalent. A licence from one of these countries can be exchanged for a Great Britain licence provided it has been valid within the last 10 years.
Vocational licence holders: if someone becomes resident in GB and they hold a vocational licence issued in Jersey or the Isle of Man, they may drive for 12 months and may exchange their vocational entitlement for the British equivalent.
Vocational driving licences from Guernsey are not exchangeable. |

| All other countries |
|
| May drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes and with up to 16 passenger seats, provided their full licence or driving permit remains valid for up to 12 months from the date of entering Great Britain. However, they may only drive large vehicles which have been registered outside GB and which they have driven into this country. |

|
Ordinary licence holders: provided their full licence remains valid, they can drive any category of small vehicle shown on their licence for up to 12 months from the time they became resident. To ensure continuous driving entitlement, a provisional Great Britain licence must have been obtained and a driving test(s) passed before the 12 month period elapses. If they obtain a provisional licence during this period, they are not subject to provisional licence conditions, e.g. displaying ‘L’ plates or being supervised by a qualified driver or being precluded from motorways.
However, if they do not pass a test within the 12-month concessionary period they will not be allowed to drive as a full licence holder and provisional licence conditions will apply.
If they do not apply for a provisional licence within the first 12 months they must stop driving and obtain a British provisional licence with a view to passing a driving test. Provisional licence conditions will then apply.
Vocational licence holders: new residents may not drive large vehicles until they have passed the relevant Great Britain driving test. Driving test candidates are required to pass a motor car (category B) test first before applying for provisional entitlement for larger vehicles. |
